WHAT IS WAREHOUSING?
Most people probably knows what a warehouse is –a place where you store things waiting to move them somewhere else. But what about the -ing part? What is warehousing and its functions?
The concept of warehousing can be described as the sum of all the deliberate activities taking place in a warehouse in its daily operations. Or, put differently, all the warehouse processes necessary to perform the main functions of a warehouse. These functions can be divided into 6 categories:
- Receiving. Where incoming goods is received, checked and labeled.
- Put-away. Placing the received goods in storage, in a way that makes picking efficient.
- Storage. Designing the warehouse in a way that is space-effienct and process-effiecient.
- Picking. Automated or manual picking of orders, B2B or directly to consumer.
- Packing. Packing the picked items in boxes, safely and with as little air as possible.
- Shipping. Transferring the packed boxes to transport company and checking them out.

To the consumer, warehousing is a hidden part of the supply chain, but non the less very important.
