Elektroskandia Norway, part of the Rexel Group, is dedicated to serving customers all over Norway with the best products and solutions. When this electrical goods wholesaler moved to a new warehouse, they worked together with Consafe Logistics to ensure that they could use the purpose-built premises in the best way possible. Through shared knowledge and effective teamwork, coupled with new investments in the machine park, Elektroskandia improved overall efficiency in the forklift picking area YTD by 18,5%, and that’s just the beginning.
When serving the needs of customers all over a country as vast as Norway, a robust and reliable logistics solution is hugely important. Elektroskandia has been using Consafe Logistics and its warehouse management system – Astro WMS® – since 2006, which is used in the central distribution centre. There are other warehouses around Norway, but they don’t have the same demands and requirements as the main warehouse.

“Astro WMS®, for us, is fantastic,” says Johan Stenhamre, logistics development lead at Elektroskandia. “It’s difficult to imagine our daily work without it, and we’ve been using it for so long now. It’s really an integral part of what we do, as our logistics operation is really what separates us from the competition.”
For a long time, Elektroskandia was using an old building which had been converted into a warehouse, where stock was kept in three different locations on-site. There was the main building, a basement, and a permanent tent structure. This set-up was functional, but as the business grew it was clear that Elektroskandia needed to move somewhere more suitable.
“We made the move to a modern, purpose-built warehouse,” explains Johan. “This was a real challenge, as we have just one distribution centre. We couldn’t close for the duration of the move, so we had to serve our customers whilst transporting stock from one place to another. It was a real logistics challenge, but it went smoothly. After we had moved in, we decided to ask Consafe Logistics to carry out a full evaluation of our processes and our use of the WMS system at the new Distribution Centre, to see how we could work even more efficiently in the future.”

Elektroskandia asked Consafe Logistics to provide a DC Walkthrough in order to get the best out of the new premises. Our specialists visited with the goal of challenging existing processes and ways of working, and discovering how the existing Astro WMS® setup could be better utilised.
“We moved in 2017,” adds Johan. “We needed a fresh set of eyes to look at how we set up in Astro WMS®, and how we can improve practically. Then we needed to look at how we integrate everything. What we’ve really seen over the years is how the team at Consafe Logistics have developed their practical knowledge. They’ve always had the digital expertise, but now they have people with one foot in physical, and one in digital, which is so helpful.”
During the walkthrough, our team was able to carry out a full analysis and suggest potential areas for improvement. These areas were wide ranging, from optimising the picking area to how various aspects of the warehouse were set up in the WMS. After Elektroskandia implemented the advice based on the walkthrough, the business began to feel the benefits.
Following the walkthrough, Elektroskandia managed to significantly reduce the number of relocations from buffer to picking locations. In practicality, this means the business reduced non-value-creating work, as these relocations took valuable time that could be spent elsewhere. Rather than these relocations, Elektroskandia has been able to reallocate these resources to picking instead, resulting in better logistics performance, and ultimately, a better customer experience.
“Based on the advice that came from the DC walkthrough,” says Johan, “we managed to reduce the average number of relocations from buffer to pick-up site by making adjustments in the pallet area. The number dropped from 145 relocations per week down to 67. However, the gains didn’t stop there. We also changed the frequency settings, invested in new forklifts better suited to our new DC, and made other adjustments which resulted in total efficiency gains in the forklift picking area of around 18,5% when we compared year-on-year figures. This makes a real difference!”
As Elektroskandia and Consafe Logistics have worked together to maximize the potential of the new Distribution Centre, the partnership has only become stronger. Both businesses are constantly learning, improving and evolving.

“I think our relationship with Consafe Logistics works great,” concludes Johan. “If we have an issue, we can approach and say ‘this is the problem, and this is what the customer needs’, and they can say whether that’s something that can be solved in the WMS, or something that may need another system. They have a wealth of experience with other customers too, so they can use that to help us in these situations. Most importantly, we can work alongside them and come up with ideas together.”
