WHAT IS WAREHOUSE AUTOMATION?
Supply chains are under constant pressure to deliver more, better, and faster. Automation can have a significant role in that, but to benefit from it the most, you need to invest in the right foundations. So, let´s see what it is and how it influences warehouse operations.
What is warehouse automation, really?
By combining mechanics and software, warehouse automation makes your operations smarter, enabling you to produce more with fewer resources. Automation solutions provide the range, agility, and speed necessary to fulfill customer expectations and handle an omnichannel approach. Automation levels can vary enormously for different companies and industries, so first, you need to understand how it works and for which purpose you will use it.
To break it down, let’s start with what warehouse activities are about: processes. On an aggregated level, there are two kinds of warehouse processes that can be automated:
- The decision-making process
It is about handling the information to optimize warehouse processes, utilize resources, and decide where to store and how to pick. Automated decision-making removes the potential of human error and increases warehouse efficiency, thus contributing to a better customer experience through a quicker shipping process.
- The goods handling process.
It is about how you move goods within the warehouse, all the way from inbound through storage, picking, packing, and outbound. The automation of these processes can increase efficiency, reduce workplace injuries, and improve warehouse productivity.
Level 1: No or low automation. A warehouse primarily driven by manual processes or basic decision-making automation.
Level 2: System automation. Warehouses that use advanced automated decision-making, e.g., Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), to support warehouse processes. The WMS can be integrated into simpler equipment such as RFID technology, pick-to/put-to/pick-by light, and voice picking to support more efficient decision-making and picking.
Level 3: Mechanized automation. When the decision-making is automated, the next step is to automate goods handling. This level typically includes conveyor systems and automated storage and retrieval systems. The full functionality of the WMS is likely not utilized.
Level 4: Sophisticated automation. The final level of automation, where warehouses use highly automated equipment for more complex goods handling flows, such as AS/RS, conveyors, automatic sorters, AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles), a robotic picking system, and automatic palletizers to eliminate manual movements and to streamline order picking processes. This level of automation needs a Warehouse Control System (WCS) or Warehouse Execution System (WES) that can handle complex decision-making logic.
When looking to implement or increase warehouse automation, the setup should always be determined by the specific aspects of your operation, the challenges you want to overcome, and the gains you want to achieve. Selecting the right solution will also make it possible to maximize your ROI.
